Ohio’s Leading Driver’s License Defense Team
Drivers in Ohio are subject to the Ohio Driver’s License Point System. This system allows the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to assign a certain amount of points to certain traffic offenses. The total number of points that a driver accumulates can have several serious consequences, such as the suspension of a license.
Each type of offense is worth a certain number of points, with the number of points increasing depending on the severity of the offense. Drivers who accumulates five points will receive a warning letter from the BMV informing them of a possible license suspension. Once a driver accumulates 12 or more points in a two-year period, the BMV will suspend their license for a six-month period. This period is effective 20 days after the date on the notice letter the BMV send out to inform the driver of the suspension.
There are several offense that can lead to points on your license. These include:
- Vehicular Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, or Aggravated Vehicular Homicide
- OVI (Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs)
- Failure to Stop After an Accident
- Failure to Comply with a Police Officer
- Street Racing
- Driving Under Suspension of a License
- Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle
- Operation in Willful or Wanton Disregard for Persons or Property
- Underage Operation of a Vehicle Under the Influence (UOVI)
- Speeding in excess of 30 miles per hour of the speed limit
- Speeding in excess of 11 to 29 miles per hour of a posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour or more
- Speeding 6 to 29 miles per hour of a posted speed limit of 54 miles per hour or less
- Other moving violations
Levels of Driver’s License Suspensions
Not all license suspensions through the Ohio Points System are the same. While a suspension can affect a normal driver’s license, commercial driver’s license (CDL), temporary permit, or probationary license, there are different levels of suspensions that can determine how long a suspension can last. These include:
- Class 1 – Suspension for Life
- Class 2 – Suspension for 3 years to life
- Class 3 – Suspension for 2 to 10 years
- Class 4 – Suspension for 1 to 5 years
- Class 5 – Suspension for 6 months to 3 years
- Class 6 – Suspension for 3 months to 2 year
- Class 7 – Suspension for up to 1 year
